Pelagic clays as archives of marine iron isotope chemistry

چکیده

Slowly accumulating pelagic clays are enriched in metals that were formerly seawater, including iron, an important micronutrient. Because the minimally remobilized oxygenated porewater, may be a potential archive for records of past marine micronutrient cycling. Here, we present record changes hydrogenous iron (Fe) isotopes since late Cretaceous derived from dated with osmium isotope chronostratigraphy. To optimize separation metal (oxy)hydroxides bulk sediment, repeatedly leached oxic clay sample under variable conditions (HCl molarity, temperature, time) and measured element concentrations, Fe isotopes, Os isotopes. The common behavior elements amidst permutations leach experiment offers insight into which components dissolved defined range successful leaches. We applied our optimal (1 M HCl, 24 h at 20 °C) to 45 samples Site U1366 South Pacific Gyre. resulting suggests dynamic cycle water column overlying over 95 million years. Early site's history, trends interpreted as reflecting hydrothermal distance ridge. Contributions background source identified well transition dust-like after 50 Ma until present. Constructing similar multiple sites will provide basin-wide perspective on how has changed million-year timescales.

Trophic ecology of marine birds and pelagic fishes from Reunion Island as determined by stable isotope analysis

Stable nitrogen and carbon isotopes were used to investigate trophic ecology in tropical marine bird and fish communities from Reunion Island, western Indian Ocean. Firstly, isotope signatures in the liver of Barau's petrels Pterodroma baraui, Audubon's shearwaters Puffinus lherminieri bailloni, and white-tailed tropicbirds Phaethon lepturus were used to compare their trophic levels and determi...

Pelagic Iron Recycling in the Southern Ocean: Exploring the Contribution of Marine Animals

The availability of iron controls primary productivity in large areas of the Southern Ocean. Iron is largely supplied via atmospheric dust deposition, melting ice, the weathering of shelf sediments, upwelling, sediment resuspension, mixing (deep water, biogenic, and vertical mixing) and hydrothermal vents with varying degrees of temporal and spatial importance. However, large areas of the South...

Modelling Seasonal Distribution of Pelagic Marine Fishes

The distribution of pelagic marine fishes and invertebrates varies seasonally. However, information on the seasonal variation of the distribution of most pelagic marine fishes and invertebrates is scarce. In this paper, seasonal changes in distribution ranges of commercially exploited pelagic fishes and invertebrates are predicted based on the existing Sea Around Us Project distribution, a pred...

Antagonistic interactions among marine pelagic bacteria.

Recent studies suggest that bacterial abundance and species diversity in the ocean's water column are variable at the millimeter scale, apparently in response to the small-scale heterogeneity in the distribution of organic matter. We hypothesized that bacterium-bacterium antagonistic interactions may contribute to variations in community structure at the microscale. We examined each of the 86 i...

Marine pelagic ecosystems: the west Antarctic Peninsula.

The marine ecosystem of the West Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) extends from the Bellingshausen Sea to the northern tip of the peninsula and from the mostly glaciated coast across the continental shelf to the shelf break in the west. The glacially sculpted coastline along the peninsula is highly convoluted and characterized by deep embayments that are often interconnected by channels that facilitate...
